Affordable Dental Care in Guelph Through the Canadian Dental Care Plan

Dentistry on Guelph is a participating CDCP provider. Eligible patients can receive cleanings, fillings, x-rays and more, at little to no cost

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program designed to provide essential dental care services to eligible Canadians, including families, seniors, and individuals. With dental care costs often being a barrier for many, the CDCP ensures access to necessary treatments for those who qualify. Individuals with existing dental benefits, either through social programs or employment, may not qualify for the CDCP, underscoring the importance of maintaining existing plans while seeking additional support through government programs. But what exactly does the CDCP cover, and how can it benefit you? Let’s dive into the details of this program in our comprehensive 2025 guide.

Why Was the CDCP Introduced?

Dental care plays a vital role in overall health; however, many Canadians face limited access due to high expenses. To address this issue, the Canadian government launched the CDCP to improve oral health care and offer coverage for essential dental services. This federal government program is designed to support families with incomes below $90,000 and individuals who lack private dental insurance, ensuring comprehensive dental plan coverage. By addressing these financial barriers, the CDCP aims to create a healthier, more inclusive Canada. The initiative not only improves access to necessary treatments but also promotes long-term oral health care, fostering a community where dental wellness is attainable for all eligible residents.

Do You Qualify for CDCP in 2026?

As of 2026, the CDCP is now fully open to all eligible Canadians regardless of age, no longer limited to seniors or children. You qualify if you meet all four criteria:

Canadian Resident You must be a Canadian resident for tax purposes.

Filed Your Taxes Must have filed your 2025 tax return to qualify for 2026–27.

Income Under $90K Adjusted family net income (AFNI) must be below $90,000.

No Private Insurance No access to employer, pension, or private dental coverage.

Note: If your spouse has dental coverage through their employer, you may not qualify, even if you are not on their plan.

Cost and Payment for CDCP Services

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal government initiative aimed at improving access to dental care for eligible Canadian residents. While the program significantly reduces financial barriers, it’s important to understand that treatments under the CDCP may not be entirely free. Patients might need to pay a portion of their dental appointment costs, known as co-payments. The co-payment amount is determined by the patient’s adjusted family net income:

  • Income under $70,000: 0% co-payment (100% coverage)
  • Income between $70,000 and $79,999: 40% co-payment (60% coverage)
  • Income between $80,000 and $89,999: 60% co-payment (40% coverage)

Beginning March 2025, CDCP members must renew their coverage. Before applying, they need to file their 2024 taxes and receive their Notice of Assessment. Renewals can be done at canada.ca/dental, through MSCA, or by phone.

  • Renewal Deadline: Members must renew their coverage before June 1, 2025, to avoid a gap in coverage.
  • Renewal Methods: Renewals can be completed online, by phone, or at a Service Canada Centre.

It’s crucial to note that the fees covered by the federal government may not always cover the full cost of treatment at a dental office. Patients will be responsible for any remaining balance. Additionally, the CDCP is not intended to replace existing dental coverage. Canadians should maintain their current dental insurance, as they might not qualify for the CDCP if they drop their existing coverage.
